What they needed

The rising cost of living and lingering impact of the pandemic brought financial security to the top of the priority list for the Medical Protection Society’s Reward & Benefits team. But with budget constraints and initial feelings of sensitivity around discussing personal finances with employees, the team faced some big challenges.

The purpose was clear from the start – to create a comprehensive financial wellbeing strategy that empowered employees, reduced financial stress, enhanced overall wellbeing and integrated into existing support structures. The approach needed to meet the needs of a diverse workforce, which included various age groups, cultural backgrounds, and job roles ranging from entry-level to senior management. The Reward & Benefits team was also keen to improve awareness and usage of existing benefits, such as salary sacrifice schemes and employee discounts.

After running focus groups and surveys to better understand the workforce’s needs and concerns, the team began searching for a partner that could help them increase financial literacy, encourage savings and ethical lending, improve usage of existing benefits and support life milestones. They were conscious to find a solution that would be able to leverage existing systems to deliver support without additional costs.

Working closely with Reward Gateway | Edenred, the Medical Protection Society (MPS) launched MADE for Me – a central platform that streamlined access to all resources, applications and employee benefits. Alongside the platform launch, the team introduced SmartTech™ and a new Mortgage Advice Service, as well as reviewed the Holiday Trading rules to open it up as a more inclusive benefit. Existing health and wellbeing resources were more clearly signposted, and educational resources that developed financial confidence were promoted.

 Uniting and promoting the company’s existing support, benefits and resources had been one of the key objectives of the platform. MADE for ME successfully achieved this by pulling together everything from employee discounts right through to payroll lending and educational materials from the MPS learning platform. Ease-of-use has also been key, with employees able to access the platform from any work or personal mobile or laptop, at any time.


What they achieved

As a central platform that effectively integrated financial wellbeing into MPS’s overarching wellbeing strategy, MADE for Me directly addressed employee concerns about the rising cost of living. Since its launch, annual wellbeing survey results have significantly improved. Employees feel more supported, more ‘on top’ of their personal finances, and more aware of the resources available to improve their general wellbeing.

Engagement with employee discounts has surged, with usage more than doubling in the month following the start of the new strategy. The first application for a SmartTech™ purchase came within an hour of the platform’s launch and applications have continued to rise consistently. Participation in payroll savings and lending options has grown steadily, with employees reporting feeling significantly more informed and confident in managing their finances.

The integration of financial support with broader health and wellbeing resources has delivered a more holistic approach, ultimately reducing stress and anxiety and contributing to a more positive workplace culture.
