How a rebrand of Cox Automotive’s employee benefits transformed engagement and helped save its people £44,000 in annual discounts

What they needed
Cox Automotive has a long history of modernising and evolving the way businesses buy, own and sell used vehicles. Today, that passion is powered by a large and diverse workforce with ages ranging from 18 to 85.
When the company realised that awareness and uptake of its reward and benefits wasn’t where it could be, it decided to create a new Total Rewards programme and branding to re-energise its offering, reflect its purpose and provide even greater support and motivation to its employees.
As part of this process, Cox Automotive needed to replace its existing benefits platform, which was inflexible, incapable of adapting to new branding and unable to house all its benefits in one place. The new platform had to be easy for all employees to access and use, regardless of whether they were desk-based or not or how tech savvy they were. In addition, the platform needed to provide a simple experience for the Total Rewards team to make changes whenever the offering evolved.
With the rising cost of living, the business also wanted to enhance its discounts and wider benefits offering to help employees make significant savings.

How we helped
After a thorough review, Cox Automotive rebranded and relaunched its rewards and benefits as ‘Gear Up’, signifying a shift in pace and energy. During this process, the Reward Gateway | Edenred team worked in partnership with the business to revamp benefits and design a new portal to reflect the new brand.
Via a single login, the new Gear Up branded portal provides employees with a one-stop-shop for employee benefits, discounts, rewards, a Wellbeing Centre and other benefits including pensions, as well as the company’s new recognition nomination scheme. With a user-friendly tile-based layout, employees can easily find what they’re looking for using their desktop, tablet or mobile apps.
Discounts are now easily available through the platform and app, helping employees save hundreds of pounds a year on shopping, with savings on everything from everyday essentials to luxury goods available.
Life is also easier for the Total Rewards team, who can now refresh the tiles themselves whenever they need to promote certain benefits, launch competitions or mark key events such as the opening of the benefits window.
Cox Automotive also now runs the benefits window and labour intensive elements such as Holiday Trading through the platform, saving time that was previously spent on a manual and spreadsheet-based process. This has allowed the team to reassign that time and resource to more strategic projects.
What they achieved
The launch of the Gear Up portal has transformed engagement with Cox Automotive’s full range of rewards, benefits and recognition offering. A clear show of this has been that its people have saved over £42,000 through discounts in the last year, with a lot of the spend on supermarket food shopping and essential electrical goods. Word continues to spread through regular comms and passionate advocates who tell stories of how much they saved. As a result, spending through discounts has increased by around 9% year-on-year since launch.
Holiday Trading has also allowed employees to purchase annual leave to the value of £220,000, actually saving them £70,000 and the organisation £30,000 in NI contributions over the course of a year.
The launch of the new Recognition & Reward scheme has seen a huge 28,000 eCards and moments of recognition sent between employees in the last three years. This flow of recognition has been supported by 76.4% of the workforce embracing these new tools and showing their appreciation for their colleagues. On top of this, monetary awards have also seen more than £158,000 spent in rewards over the last year.
The Cox Automotive team are delighted to have driven the active user rate of their platform to 96%, and are continuing to look to the future. Reporting and analytics tools built into the platform are providing the insights the team needs to shape their benefits and communications strategy for the future. One area they’re looking to is the continued personalisation of the platform and in giving each employee the opportunity to further customise their benefit package to their individual needs.
